We recently told you about ENT as a specialty , but did you know that beyond the dysfunctions in the ears, nose and throat, this specialty can explain various ailments that we can face, ranging from visual disturbances, discomfort in the middle of a crowd or feelings of drunkenness? Various symptoms that can be addressed through an ENT sub-specialty: the vertigo management.
Otoneurology is a specialty aimed at diagnosing and treating vertigo. Dr Yashirally Peerbaccus talks us through this universe that is still relatively unknown here: “There are many patients who suffer from vertigo and who are misguided, or who just live with it. Dizziness, feelings of physical instability, even vomiting or nausea may be signs of vertigo due to a problem with the inner ear”.
This type of vertigo can cause headaches and can also give the impression of having a blurry vision. It happened that people who erroneously thought they had vision problems with their glasses changed their lenses, only to discover that there was no improvement thereafter. Additionally, people with inner ear vertigo may also feel uncomfortable in the middle of a crowd.
Dr. Peerbaccus has thus witnessed during his career, situations that are funny, to say the least. He relates, with a humorous tone, a case related to an inner ear vertigo, where a man suffered from vertigo, and whose colleagues at work blamed him all the time for being drunk from the very morning!
People suffering from this kind of vertigo can resort to various types of treatments. The treatment related to positional vertigo (the sudden and brief sensation that one is spinning or that the inside of one’s head is spinning) is quite straightforward. Positional vertigo can be treated in a single consultation, and will require specialised repositioning manoeuvres performed by Dr. Peerbaccus. “Other types of vertigo may require rehabilitation sessions, medication, or even the possibility of hospitalisation in the event of acute vertigo. There are also types of chronic vertigo that may require surgery”.
And are there any methods that can be applied to prevent these situations from happening in the first place? “These pathologies often appear from the age of 30, and are related to stress. Thus, prevention requires management of stress and overwork”
What about the diagnosis? As vertigo management is a relatively new service here, people often do not get the correct referral for inner ear vertigo. Unfortunately, it is not necessarily visible on classic MRI-type tests, or through a blood test. In order to make a precise diagnosis, specialised medical equipment is required, as well as the trained eye and thorough experience of the specialist! Dr. Peerbaccus therefore has state-of-the art equipment, in order to offer precise diagnoses.
Now that you are aware of the realities surrounding the inner ear vertigo, do not turn a turn a deaf ear if you have experienced the symptoms mentioned above, but see a specialist! Dr Yashirally Peerbaccus’ consultations are available at Bon Pasteur Clinic on Tuesday mornings. In addition, a 24/7 vertigo emergency service is now available at Bon Pasteur Clinic, in collaboration with Dr. Peerbaccus. An appointment can therefore be made at 401-9500.
